This low kill shelter DESPERATELY needs volunteers just to come in an hour here or there
and let these animals out of their cages to stretch their legs and play. It's heartbreaking
to see them day after day just laying in their cages . They need their exercise, they need
to be comfortable with the human touch of petting & playing.

The Edgewater Animal Shelter, a LOW KILL FACILITY, is always in need of donations and volunteers. If you have just an hour here or there during the week, volunteers are badly needed just to play with the cats & kittens or exercise the dogs. It's very important that the animals get out of their cages & interact with people as much as possible. I guarantee when you leave there, you'll feel so good knowing that you made a difference in the life of an animal. And on Saturdays, the busiest day for adoptions, they need volunteers simply to answer the phone or to show visitors the cute animals available for adoption. Being a volunteer is perfect for young & old alike, the only requirement is that you love animals
So, PLEASE, if you're sitting there wanting a reason to get out of the house a few hours a week, here is the perfect opportunity! Many of you tell me that it would break your heart to volunteer at a shelter and you're afraid you would want to take them all home. But, actually the opposite happens. Remember, this is a LOW KILL shelter. Animals are kept until adopted and are only euthanized if they're vicious or otherwise determined to be unadoptable perhaps for health reasons. You will bond with these animals and when an adoption takes place you feel so great knowing you helped that to happen. The animals truly depend on you to be their voice.
In addition to food for the cats & dogs----Bleach, Dawn dishwashing liquid, dishwasher detergent, liquid laundry detergent, & Pinesol are items that are used on a daily basis and they're ALWAYS in need of.
If you're looking to adopt, the workers & volunteers would love to show you some of the little darlings that are waiting for permanent homes. The animals faces will just melt your heart!. Also,if you go to look at kittens or puppies, please don't overlook the adults. They're often the hardest to get adopted . Adults can still be playful and
very loving; there are no house breaking issues to deal with and their temperment is already established. And, they often have a sixth sense--they seem to know they're being given a second chance and go out of their way to show you how much it is appreciated.

I am looking for a new owner for my 4 yr old snake. I purchased him from a pet shop when he was a baby and raised him myself. Very friendly, He loves to play in the tub and hang on your neck. I have been feeding him live mice. He is big enough to eat rats I just prefer to feed him mice still. He eats once every week or 2 weeks. I am looking to rehome him based on the fact I don't give him the attention I once did.
Asking Rehoming Fee $70.00, included will be his heating lamp w/ new bulb, water dish, plant, and wood log he likes to lay under. (w/ out cage)

His glass aquarium home, is about 31" inches long. Metal screen lid w/ 4 clamps, when secured no way he will be getting out so nothing to worry about him escaping his cage. It has a scenery background, water dish, plant, wood chip gravel. Also included will be his heating lamp w/ new bulb.

Rats are in one cage, mice in another (they are, after all, enemies!) and have been loved, but my girls have both
developed allergies and we had to get them out of the house.
Whether you are volunteering an hour or a day or several days a week, the animals benefit greatly.
Socialization & interracting with people is the most important aspect of any animals's development. It can make
or break an adoption opportunity.
MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED. and if you're sitting there thinking it would be too hard seeing
all of the cute little faces knowing they're going to die, let me assure you of something. This is not a regular shelter
where the animals have a time limit before euthanasia.
This is a LOW KILL shelter, which means that the animals housed there have a place to stay until adopted. They are not
euthanized unless they're vicious or for possibly health reasons determined to be unadoptable.
The shelter is not a sad place where you will be reduced to tears and want to save any animal. You will actually enjoy being
there, knowing you are making a difference for the animals.
Yes, you may witness witness animals who have been neglected & abused, but you will also witness the true love & care
these animals receive from the staff & volunteers alike. And, when an adoption does take place, you will burst with pride
knowing you helped to make it happen.
Sitting at home feeling sorry for the animals in shelters does nothing to help the situation.

PLEASE TAKE THAT ACTION AND BE PART OF THE SOLUTION.
PLEASE - PLEASE - PLEASE consider you local shelters. The very low fee that is charged up front gives you the
peace of mind that your new pet has had all shots and been checked over throughly for worms. etc. for the first full year.
Most importantly, the fee covers the spaying or neutering which is very costly for you to do later on at your own expense.
If you feel that you can't afford the low adoption fee at these shelters, perhaps you shouldn't adopt an animal at all.
Regardless of how cute that puppy or kitten is; it is a real added expense and serious responsibility to own
an animal. Too many times, people don't think this through and that's when the animal ends up at the shelter or
even worse, on the street to fend for themselves.

A gorgeous tiger cat named Roxy, WHO IS DECLAWED, has been there IN A CAGE since April-that's right, 9 MONTHS!
Try walking by her cage without her looking up at you as if to say 'Here I am! Take me! Take me!'
A beautiful, sweet natured cat named Secret, has lived her entire life there IN A CAGE since being brought in as a kitten last January--ONE YEAR NOW!
Her markings are so unique & I really can't understand why she keeps getting passed by.
Another gorgeous tiger cat named Rufus has been there IN A CAGE since July-- 6 MONTHS!
There's not a mean bone in his body, such a snuggler.
I can personally assure you that every single one of them is loving & just want to be loved, petted & played with..
This is only three examples of the nearly 60 cats & kittens that desperately need you to consider giving them a home.
There are many, many more that have been there since April & before along with ones that came in in the past month or two.
THIS SHELTER IS A LOW KILL SHELTER. Basically that means that no animal is euthanized regardless of breed or age
unless it is deemed unadoptable because of health reasons or temperment issues.
Every dog & cat is given the same opportunity to find a loving home.
On the surface that sounds wonderful for the animals. But, the reality is that no matter how nice the accommodations
are, these animals are living in cages month after month after month waiting for someone to take them to a real home.
The biggest complaint I hear from people is that "it's so expensive" to adopt from a shelter, and they would rather get one for free.
For only $60 you actually are getting it for better than free when you factor in all the shots, worming, neutering or spaying, etc.
that the shelter pays for before adopting them out. At $60, the shelter is NOT making a profit, they're simply putting that fee towards
the next animal that comes in for treatment & a home.
$60 wouldn't even cover your basic vet visit if you had it done on your own.
If you can't afford the adoptions fee, then please don't adopt at all. Because, realistically you won't be able to afford the proper care, feeding
or the spaying or neutering that comes with owning a pet,and the cycle of too many kittens & cats ending up in shelters continues.
Too many people complain about the overabundance of feral cats running the neighborhoods and wonder why "Animal Control"
doesn't "do their job" in picking them up. Pick them up and take them where? Literally every cage is full. I guess they could round
them up and euthanize them all and that might make a lot of people happy. But, the problem will never go away unless these animals
are properly cared for and spayed or neutered.
If you're considering adopting, PLEASE check out the wonderful animals at the shelter first. Bring the kids, there's a playroom where everyone
interact before making such an important decision. You're not just "getting a cat or dog"--you're bringing in a new member of the family to live with
you for many years to come. If this is not how you feel, then please don't adopt. Any adopted animal deserves proper food & care.
If and when the decision is made that some of these animals have to be euthanized because of lack of space, don't criticize the shelter unless you've done your part
to help the situation.

As she read my kennel card I hoped she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and make a difference in someone's life.
She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.
Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to always be by her side!

I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes!
