***To convert your Carrier FA4BNF036 air handler from an R-22 to an R-410A system, you will need a #73 piston (often labeled as having an orifice size of \(0.073\)" or \(0.074\)"). This specific piston size is designed to properly restrict and meter R-410A for a nominal 3-ton to 3.5-ton system capacity. [1, 2, 3]
The conversion requires several specific actions and considerations:
• Piston Replacement: You cannot use your old R-22 piston. R-410A operates at much higher pressures, and using an R-22 piston will cause incorrect superheat and performance issues. [1]
• Teflon Ring Orientation: When installing the new R-410A piston, ensure the side with the white Teflon ring faces downwards towards the evaporator coil, never upwards. [1]
• System Flushing: Since R-22 uses mineral oil and R-410A requires POE oil, the system lines and indoor coil must be thoroughly flushed to prevent compressor burnout. [1]
Alternatively, to achieve better operating efficiency, many technicians opt to install a matched R-410A TXV (Thermostatic Expansion Valve) rather than a fixed piston. [1]
